Graphic Depictions of Student Life
(Warning, prospective students look away, this post contains spoilers!)
The Times Higher Education Supplement just tweeted about an illustration of the way University Professors regard students. The artist responsible for the amusing-and possibly accurate-cartoon is the hugely talented Jorge Cham, who offers endless observations of academia at Piled Higher and Deeper. While completing my PhD I began to use Piled Higher and Deeper as a sort of therapy. After all, beyond my necessarily-A.W.O.L group of fellow-PhDers, where else might one find such understanding?
Among my all-time favourites (several of which were attached to my fridge for some months as a gentle hint to jobbed friends) are:
The one about the impoliteness of asking a PhD student how their research is going
This is so true I wanted to wear it on a T-shirt all day everyday so as never to encounter those horrible words…
Again, very true, if I could earn while I learn I’d be a millionaire!
And, of course, the one about dating fellow PhD students
Thankfully this one is a little less close to home, although the bit about wooing me with research findings does strike a chord!
PhD life without Piled Higher and Deeper would just not be the same!!! The guy is in our heads, hearts and souls — and has obviously been there himself!! There's no other way he could now what 'we' know:)
My personal favourites
The scruffy phd-er daydreaming about dressing Audrey Hepburn style and being asked to dance.
What your parents actually ask you over the phone and what you actually hear:
'How are you'? = 'What are you doing, are you ever going to graduate?'etc
and of course the one, the only
